      SANTORINI

Odysseas Elytis, the Greek Nobel Award winner poet, described Santorini as “the Daughter of aGreat Anger". This line perfectly portrays the landscapethat came out as a result of at least 12 majoreruptions during the last 400,000 years. This ishow were formed the unique caldera, this sceneryof incomparable beauty, this ode to the magnificencethat leaves every visitor enchanted and ecstaticat its sight!

      WHAT TO DO

      • Feel the sunset... one of the main reasons why thousands of people visit Santorini. Magical colors, stunning views and endless beauty in Oia (the most famous spot is the Castle), Fira, Firostefani and Imerovigli for those who want to combine the sunset with the "caldera miracle". Alternatively, the Lighthouse of Akrotiri, the Monastery of the ProphetElias (in Pyrgos village) and Vlychada Beach offer equally strong emotions.
      • Enjoy the Caldera...the wonder of Santorini, illustrating the eternal struggle between nature and man in one of its world’s best representations. Experience a walk along the edge of caldera (the path Fira-Firostefani is great). Enjoy your coffee and cocktails at the stylish cafes. Have a delicious lunch or dinner overlooking the spectacular view of the volcano. You can never get enough of this experience!

The island offers unique gastronomic emotions through a great range of products, such as the famous Vinsanto wine, the white eggplantand the red cherry tomato that accompanies salads and all sorts of dishes.
      • Discover churches...Santorini has many churches, large and small, in every village or corner of the island. White churches with blue domes and masterfully- made steeples. PanagiaEpiskopi (in Mesa Gonia) is well worth a visit.
      • Find hidden corners...There are many hidden corners such as Ammoudi -a cinematic backdrop of the impressive red rock full of restaurants- on the foot of Oia . Or the nearby church of St Nicholas, an ideal spot for a quick swim.

      ATTRACTIONS: BEACHES

Beaches in Santorini are the point where the Aegean blue meets the black, red and white sand that the islands’volcanic heritage left behind. Santorini beaches cannot be found anywhere else in the world.

      • Red Beach... the most impressive beach of Santorini. A deep red bay with fine pebbles, where high red rocks seem to have plunged into the sea. The Red beach is the most favorite one among tourists of all ages that arrive here to swim and take photos of this absolutely incomparable beach.

Tip: Do not forget to take bottles of water from the canteens and shoes for the trail that leads to the beach. You can combine swimming on the Red beach with a visit to the archaeological site of Akrotiri.
      • Monolithos...the shallowest beach in Santorini, preferred by families and those who want to enjoy a quiet swim. Black sand, tennis, basketball and volleyball courts plus a playground will make your time on Monolithos beach even more pleasant.
      • Vlychada... one of the most beautiful beaches in Santorini. The white sculptured pumice rocks create a lunar landscape perfectly combined with the black sand and blue sea. Vlychada is an organized and quiet beach for those who want to spend endless hours by the sea.
      • St. George-Perivolos...the cosmopolitan coastline of the island, with the stylish beach bars, authentic lounge allure and water sports facilities. Crystal clear deep blue water and black sand make Perivolos one of the most exquisite beaches on the island.
      • Perissa... is awarded with one blue flag. The natural continuation of Perivolos reaches the imposing rock of Kolada. Perissa is full of cheerful beach bars and offers several options for water sports. Favorite among “youngsters” of every age, this beach is lively throughout the day.

Tip: Perissa is located near St Irene Church that was built in the 16th century. More adventurous hikers can reach Ancient Thira.
      • Kamari... the most award winning beach on the island (with two blue flags) combines the blue color of the Aegean Sea with black sand and countless proposals for all tastes. Kamari is ideal for relaxation and swim after your visit to Ancient Thira.

Tip: You can also visit the church of ZoodoxosPigi and quench your thirst with the running spring water while watching the view of Kamari and the sea.

      AKROTIRI / ANCIENT THIRA

The prehistoric settlement of Akrotiri is one of the most important archaeological sites in the world. A city that has remained alive for 3.500 years beneath the lava, tells its story to today’s’ visitors.

      • Akrotiri: New galleries and more findings exhibited in the light of the brand new rooftop, unique in the world, await the visitors of Akrotiri’s prehistoric settlement to offer them an unforgettable cultural experience. A visit to Akrotiri is the best way to witness the connection of the island of Santorini with the volcano. In the 1600 century BC Akrotiri was a coastal city of 200 acres with about 30,000 inhabitants, leading a well-organized urban life. The multi- floored public buildings, drainage facilities, stables, food stores, workshops of all sorts of art, textiles, metallurgy, shipbuilding and other specialties are standing allover the site. It was probably in the spring of 1614BC when the life of this city was interrupted as longas sixty kilometers of lava covered the city. Thewhole population managed to run away. 3500 years later, and more specifically in 1967, excavationswere initiated by Spyros Marinatos, andthat culture untouched by time comes out in light. You'll need at least two hours to wander around the streets of this city to admire the town squares, placesof religious ceremonies, houses and warehouses, laboratories, mills and looms, while in some placesthe "rage" of lava that covered Akrotiri is still evident.Findings from Akrotiri are exhibited at the Museumof Prehistoric Thira in Fira town center, with thebeautiful original paintings and unique art style, painted clay pots and utensils, tools and jewellery. Today's Akrotiri travels its visitor to a unique world of another dimension! The  archaeological site isfully accessible for people with mobility problems;halls host thematic exhibitions, while theroof is bioclimatic, has two levels with a gap betweenthem and openings for ventilation.According to Archaeologists, only 3% of the areain Akrotiri has been revealed so far.
      • Ancient Thira: Located at the west side of Mesa Vouno above Kamarivillage, Ancient Thira was built by the Spartansettlers of the island led by King Theras who wasmeant to give his name to the island. They createda civilization in anaturally fortified area with a spectacularsea view that flourished and prospered duringthe 4th century BC. The excavations here beganin 1896 and today visitors can admire its cobbledstreets, the ruins of ancient temples, animals- symbolsof gods carved in the rock and inscriptions, thetheater of the city with the magnificent view and theAgora area. The Gymnasium and Headquartershave survived from the Ptolemaic era. Many of thefindings are exhibited at the Museum of AncientThira in Fira, which is being renovated.

      THE VOLCANO

The Santorini exceptional landscape owes everything to the volcano or volcanoes that surround
the island. A cluster of islands formed by successive eruptions have created an unparalleled
      experience for today's visitor.

      • The Santorini volcano is part of the Aegean volcanicarc and belongs to the active volcanoes ofthe world. But let's get the story from the beginning. The first name of the island of Santorini isStroggili (means ‘round’) because it had a circularshape. The eruption that changed the shapeof the island took place approximately in 1600BC and was considered to be responsible for thedestruction of the Minoan civilization of Crete, though modern discoveries have recently castdoubts on the connection of these two events. This is the first recorded eruption in which thehurling volcanic material reached 40 kms heightand, as a result, the entire eastern Mediterraneanwas covered by ash. This eruption led tothe formation of the present caldera covering anarea of 32 square kilometers.
      • Besides the caldera, volcanic eruptions have also createda series of islands surrounding the volcanoes. Located across Santorini are the islets of Thirasia anduninhabited Aspronisi. The two volcanoes – “PaleaKameni” (the smallest) and “NeaKameni” (thelargest)- are covered with various geological rocks.Today there are seven craters in NeaKameni, one in PaliaKameni and another one near thevillage of Oia, the underwater crater ofKoloumbo. The two volcanic islands can be visitedtoday and offer a unique experience. Visitorscan walk close to the craters and swim inhot springs around the volcanoes experiencingtheir beneficial effects. The island of PaleaKameni was created in 46AD, while NeaKameni was only created in 1711and is the “youngest” island in the Mediterranean.A decade of great volcanic activity in the1860s created new craters on the volcanoes thatgave the last eruption in 1950. Today all Santorinivolcanoes are in a state of "tranquility."

      • Agios Prokopios…is one of the most renowned holiday resorts in Naxos, featuring a magnificent beach with crystal blue water, awarded with Blue Flag, soft sand and idyllic surroundings. Currently Agios Prokopios is one of the most popular beach resorts on the island, offering a variety of social, beach and water sport activities.
      • Agia Anna… a small fishing village with traditional Cycladic style. The busiest spot of Agia Anna is certainly the small port, where fishing boats and yachts moor in summer. This port is lined up with delicious seaside taverns and cafeterias. Just next to the port starts a large sandy beach with crystal water.
      • Apiranthos… is a picturesque mountain village with a beautiful name meaning plenty of flowers. Apiranthos is one of the most beautiful and charming villages of Naxos, full of wonderful houses made with fine marble and has three interesting museums which are the Archaeological Museum of Apiranthos, Museum of Folk Art and Geological Museum.
      • Halki… has a long history and was once the capital of Naxos as well as its main administrative and trade centre. The many Neoclassical houses and buildings testify about the past wealth and power of the village.
      • Apollonas… The lovely fishing village which is located in the northern side of the island, 35 km from Naxos Town. It has a small sandy beach, boarded by few nice taverns, tourist shops and a mini-market. Nearby the village of Apollonas the beautiful statue of Kouros can be seen, dated back to the 6th century BC. It is believed, by many archaeologists, to represent the god Dionysus.
      • Sangri… stands out of the Cycladic style, as the dominant colors are grey and brown. Like most mountainous villages of Naxos, it has Medieval architecture, in contrast to the coastal settlements of the island with Cycladic architecture. The village is also famous for the Byzantine monasteries and the ancient Temple of Demetra. This temple is one of the most interesting archaeological monuments on the island. It was made of marble and is dated back to 530 B.C.

      ATTRACTIONS: BEACHES

There are so many options to choose from the island’s beaches, to be sure thatno one will be left uncontested!Fully organized, blue flag awarded, deserted, nudist beaches, suiting all tastes. Due to the long coastline and pleasant Mediterranean climate, there is a large number of resorts to choose, close by to your favorite beach!

      • Plaka… is the consequence of the beach of Agia Anna and is one of the most beautiful beaches of the island. It is a calm and endless sandy beach with, in some parts, big flat stones and amazing crystal clear waters. In the beginning of the beach one can find sunbeds and umbrellas but most of it keeps its unspoiled natural beauty, without any tourist facility to disfigure it.
      • Agios Prokopios… The long golden sandy beach extends over 1, 5 km and has beautiful turquoise waters, protected from the strong winds frequently blowing on the island. One part is organized and offers sunbeds, umbrellas and water sports facilities whilst the other part is left to its natural beauty and totally unspoiled by tourist facilities. Sandy dunes are softly rising on this beach and, behind them lies a small village proposing various hotels, restaurants, cafes and bars.
      • Agia Anna… is the group of several sandy beaches, interrupted only by a small fishing port and some rocky formations. Some parts of the beach are fully organized and some are not. The crystalline waters are forming, with the soft golden sand, an idyllic picture.
      • Mikri Vigla… The incredibly beautiful beach of Mikri consists of two wonderful sandy beaches separated by an impressive hill. Northern beach is wonderful, with soft golden sand and turquoise waters often affected by the meltemia winds (north winds specific to the Cyclades) which make it an ideal place for wind/kite surfing. During the past years it has become famous on the surfing communities as one of the “hottest” spots in Greece. Southern beach is an endless sandy beach with amazing crystal waters. It is protected from the meltemia winds and it is recommended for family holidays.
      • Aliko… is a wonderful beach on the south western side of the island. Aliko is lovely place to relax away from the crowded resorts of the island. This special region consists of many small bays with soft white sand and clear water. Some tamarisk trees on the shore provide shade to visitors, while the beach is not organized with sunbeds and umbrellas. Overlooking the beach there is a unique cedar forest with marvelous sand dunes. This forest has been declared as a protected natural area and creates an exotic landscape.
      • Agios Georgios… This sandy beach is the closest to the capital and for that it is one of the most popular and crowded beach of the island. It is very long, extending for many kilometers and is full organized, proposing sun beds and umbrellas for rent as well as various water sports facilities. The sand here is soft and the water clear. Across the sea you get a lovely view of Paros. If you walk round the headline on the southern end of the beach you will find a considerable amount of windsurfers. It is one of the most famous spots of the island for windsurfing, mostly for beginners’ level due to its shallow waters.
      • Pyrgaki… is one of the most beautiful sandy beaches of Naxos that reflect the peace and serenity of the island. This beautiful beach has some umbrellas and sunbeds, while the close restaurant also serves coffees, drinks and snacks. The beach is frequently affected by the winds, so it is a nice spot for windsurfing. The shallow waters are a great advantage for children and the small forest areas form an unusual scenery.
